#ConfederateHeritageMonth: John Ancrum Winslow

On Day Four of Union Victory Month, we honor the fidelity, integrity, and patriotism of Captain John Ancrum Winslow, a Southerner from Wilmington, North Carolina who remained loyal to the United States instead of betraying his country to defend slave-owning oligarchs. His ship, the USS Kearsarge, turned the highly-successful and infamous Confederate raider CSS Alabama into a reef during the Battle of Cherbourg on 19 June 1864. Captain Winslow had doggedly pursued the Alabama for two years and finally caught up to her in France. Not wanting to cause an international incident, he waited patiently outside the harbor until Alabama had fully repaired and stocked up. Winslow’s ship was fitted with a form of chain-mail armour over her vital areas, and his gunners were better. In about an hour, the Alabama was sunk. We write about that battle on its anniversary every year.

Reminder that the Confederacy were traitors who betrayed the United States and tried to destroy the union out of spite. Reminder that “heritage not hate” is Lost Cause horse shit. Reminder that the Lost Cause narrative is revisionist history bullshit. Reminder that the South seceded over slavery and economic factors tied to slavery. Also another reminder that the Confederacy is a bunch of traitors who LOST, got their asses KICKED, and were forced to BEG to be readmitted into the Union.
